Introduction to Google Sitemaps

Google recently launched a service that allows webmasters to feed Google pages they would like to have indexed. Up till now, webmasters had no control over what pages Google crawled. Webmasters could only submit their homepage to Google and hope that Google would crawl through links to find the rest of their web site.

Google's new service, Google Sitemaps, provides webmasters with a method to inform Google exactly which pages they want crawled, how often these pages change, and the order that these pages should be crawled.

Stop waiting.

Whether your web site contains a single web page or millions of pages, Google Sitemaps are useful for any business with a web site. If you want Google to crawl more of your web pages or you want to be able to tell Google when your web pages change, then you should be using Google Sitemaps.

Google Sitemaps are particularly beneficial for parts of a web site that cannot be reached by Google's crawler. For instance, dynamic elements behind a search form are particularly notorious hard for Google to index.

Why wait for Google to find your web site? Instead of waiting around, get your content indexed faster by telling Google where to look with Google Sitemaps.

Get Started.

There are only two steps to participate in Google Sitemaps:

1. Create a Google Sitemap
2. Submit the Sitemap

A Google Sitemap is an XML file that follows the Google Sitemap Protocol. The Google Sitemap contains a list of URLs and may also contain information about those URLs such as when they were modified, how often they are updated and how important they are compared to each other.

Here is how a basic Google Sitemap looks:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<urlset xmlns="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84">
<url>
<loc>http://www.yoursite.com/</loc>
<lastmod>2005-06-17</lastmod>
<changefreq>monthly</changefreq>
<priority>0.8</priority>
</url>
</urlset>

Each tag in a Google Sitemap carries information about your web site. The <url> tag informs Google that the following tags will define a web page. The <loc> tag tells Google the exact URL to crawl. The <lastmod>, <changefreq>, <priority> tags all define extra information related to the web page.

Confused? Don't Worry.

Now, if that was completely Greek to you, don't worry. There are a number of different methods you use to create a Google Sitemap. You can use Google's Sitemap Generator, but the script is still in beta and requires Python. There are other freely downloadable scripts located on Google Code.

Use of all these free programs requires knowledge of web servers and, depending on the program, may require experience with various programming languages. Some of these programs may only work with a particular content management system and may not work with big sites.

SEO Inc has the answer. Again SEO Inc is the First and only SEO Company to offer this service!

So what if you have a big web site or want an enterprise class solution? Previously, you would be out of luck. Google Sitemaps is so new and so unique that you would have to program your own solution or rely on beta software.

Introducing the Solution.

SEO Inc's Google Sitemap Generator is the solution to easily creating Google Sitemaps. Our Google Sitemap Generator crawls your web site and dynamically generates a valid Google Sitemap. We even automate the submission process.

As we crawl your entire web site, we store the URLs in a database and track modifications to your web site as they are made. This way we can update modification dates and priority so that Google can crawl your web site efficiently.

Using the Microsoft.NET Framework and our custom Sitemap Engine, we can generate and automatically submit your Sitemap.
