CalPOP com Inc reviewed by Adam Ellis

Just don't do it...

We originally were going to purchase a server from calpop (LA), but their sales people would not respond to emails or return calls. Multiple people in our company emailed and called with no luck getting through to their sales team. So we bought elsewhere and just had it hosted there...

So we were co-locating at calpop and everything was good until we needed some customer service/hardware support; our business is in Utah and calpop is in LA, so we couldn't just run on down and switch out our hardware when it needed it, so we tried to have them do it for us. But we learned our lesson from that and eventually moved all the way away from calpop because of it.

One time we had them replace a hard drive for us, but they "forgot" to turn the machine on after they replaced it and we couldn't get any help for six hours! No apologies or compensation for a full day's downtime caused by them "forgetting" to turn it back on.

Another time their server rack's power strip died and we were down for over two hours.

Another time our server was down and they asked us to email them because they were busy... our whole business was down and they wanted us to email them!

Another time they were working with us on the phone with a console hooked up to our machine and the guy had to leave and go to a meeting. We couldn't do anything about it so we hung up and called back 10 minutes later to find out when they would be able to get back onto our server and found out that the guy was not at a meeting, but he was outside on a smoke break!

They claim to not charge for items that take less than five minutes, but they charged us for most everything except resets (which they would only do when they felt like it). We have hotswappable drives and we were charged for every time they swapped one out.

We had so much trouble with them that we finally decided to pack it in and move to another hosting company, but as a final kicker they sent us back our server without the rails we had sent them. It's not just that they forgot them, we had sent them three emails detailing out exactly what needed to be returned, and we had called them and told them exactly what we had shipped and what needed to be sent back. They just didn't do it. So when we got our server back and found that the rails were missing we opened a ticket with them and they said that they would look around and see if they could find them. That was just this morning, and I doubt we will ever see those rails again.

Maybe if you live in LA this would be a good place to host your machines (because you can do your own maintenance), but if you are wanting them to handle any of your hardware maintenance you will be sorely disappointed.

The price was good and the network reliability is good, but those are about the only good aspects of this company.
