The Altus 1000E is preloaded with SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 for AMD64, which provides high performance, flexibility and scalability in both 32-bit and 64-bit environments. The operating system runs natively in 64-bit mode with Opteron support and represents the best method to get the most out of the Altus 1000E.

The first Intel-based 1U for Linux
At a time when most of the world was just beginning to offer 2U servers, we released a 1U Linux server--the first 1U Intel based Linux server to market. Since then we've worked with Intel to continually set the standard for rack-dense Linux servers.
The first Linux server with RAID and hot-swap drives
Our engineers created the first Linux RAID server that had hot-swap drives. Before we introduced our Linux RAID offerings, monitoring tools were minimal and a server had to be taken apart to replace the drive. With our latest system designs, you can fit 6 hot-swap hard drives in a 2U chassis, running RAID 5 redundancy.
The first four processor 4U and eight processor Linux server
Our customers have always demanded more computing power in smaller spaces. We delivered this once again, by shrinking the standard 7U sized Quad-Xeon server down to 4U. It took our competitors over a year to catch up. Plus, using the NEC Aqua II chipset, we released the first eight processor Xeon server for Linux. With pioneering multiprocessor technologies looming in the horizon, Penguin Computing will be at the forefront of these developments.
The first AMD based Linux servers
We were the first company in the world to offer AMD based Linux servers. Our first generation AMD servers were introduced in 1999. We've been working with AMD ever since to bring newer and better Linux servers to market. Now with our Dual Athlon MP 1U systems, AMD servers are more powerful than ever.
The first commercial Beowulf cluster
We sold what is believed to be the first commercial Beowulf cluster purchased outside of the Academic world. We continue to lead the pace in the high performance computing world with new systems like the Altus 130 1U cluster server and installation and tuning services for clusters in biotech, information processing, and education.
