  • About Penguin Computing company
Penguin Computing was founded in 1998 with one goal: to create servers that were as reliable as anything from Sun, IBM or SGI. But instead of running mainframe level hardware with proprietary Unix, they ran on x86 architecture with a dynamic new open source operating system - Linux. The company began operations in Mountain View, CA, in a room rented from an ISP.

And in the past four years, we've grown to become the largest dedicated Linux systems company in the world, with over 10,000 customers worldwide. Now, Penguin Computing has offices in San Francisco and Atlanta, and a state of the art manufacturing facility in Fremont, CA.

Our product offerings have expanded dramatically to include a wide variety of ultra-dense rackmount servers and an award-winning Linux workstation line. And throughout our history, Penguin Computing has worked hard to build the most technologically advanced Linux systems possible, as evidenced by our rich history of innovation:

The first Intel-based 1U for Linux

At a time when most of the world was just beginning to offer 2U servers, we released a 1U Linux server--the first 1U Intel based Linux server to market. Since then we've worked with Intel to continually set the standard for rack-dense Linux servers.

The first Linux server with RAID and hot-swap drives

Our engineers created the first Linux RAID server that had hot-swap drives. Before we introduced our Linux RAID offerings, monitoring tools were minimal and a server had to be taken apart to replace the drive. With our latest system designs, you can fit 6 hot-swap hard drives in a 2U chassis, running RAID 5 redundancy.

The first four processor 4U and eight processor Linux server

Our customers have always demanded more computing power in smaller spaces. We delivered this once again, by shrinking the standard 7U sized Quad-Xeon server down to 4U. It took our competitors over a year to catch up. Plus, using the NEC Aqua II chipset, we released the first eight processor Xeon server for Linux. With pioneering multiprocessor technologies looming in the horizon, Penguin Computing will be at the forefront of these developments.

The first AMD based Linux servers

We were the first company in the world to offer AMD based Linux servers. Our first generation AMD servers were introduced in 1999. We've been working with AMD ever since to bring newer and better Linux servers to market. Now with our Dual Athlon MP 1U systems, AMD servers are more powerful than ever.

    The first commercial Beowulf cluster

We sold what is believed to be the first commercial Beowulf cluster purchased outside of the Academic world. We continue to lead the pace in the high performance computing world with new systems like the Altus 130 1U cluster server and installation and tuning services for clusters in biotech, information processing, and education.

Moreover, Penguin Computing's internal infrastructure has developed an overall customer experience and satisfaction unparalleled in the industry today.

    Hardware Customization

With a wide variety of on-line ordering options, www.penguincomputing.com allows customer to configure their hardware from disk partition sizes/names to RAID volume setup. In addition, custom hardware engineering is available on standard systems so that Penguin Computing customers can obtain a system tailored specifically to any computing environment.

Professional Services Our professional services team was developed to solve customer-specific computing problems, so no matter what you need, we can provide the right solution. This list of offerings and expertise continues to grow, from customized file systems, to OS tweaking, to infrastructure design.

Customer Support One thing we've never wavered on is the level of technical support expertise we bring to you, the customer. No other systems company understands Linux as well as we do. Our technical support has never been "farmed-out" to an outside service provider. Instead we continue to this day to guarantee that you will always talk to a real Linux engineer when you call Penguin Computing Customer Support.

    Background

Sam Ockman, a Stanford University Engineering graduate and an active member of the Open Source community, founded Penguin Computing in May 1998. Penguin's early focus on establishing a reliable brand image has led it to Top Tier status in the Linux market. Penguin Computing has invested in unique Linux-specific application integration technologies for the factory, which are complemented by its unmatched hardware customization capabilities.
