SECNAP Email Security Solution Stops Georgia.zip Virus in its Tracks

BOCA RATON, Fla., Aug. 21 -- SECNAP(R) Network Security has announced that its award-winning Email Security Gateway Powered by SpammerTrap(R) effectively detected and quarantined the Georgia.zip virus-a known virus form repackaged this week to leverage growing interest in the ongoing Georgia-Russia conflict.

The virus is delivered in a password-protected zip file, inside an executable email whose subject line reports that journalists have been shot in Georgia. The email promises photographic proof in an attached zip file. Users are instructed to open the attachment with a password provided in the email, which creates an illusion of security. That action launches a malicious invasion of the user computer and client system.

Beginning late Tuesday, August 19, SpammerTrap software detected significant spikes in incoming zip files, the vast majority encrypted (password-protected) with the Georgia.zip attached.

The Email Security Gateway quarantines executable files traveling in password-protected zip files by default, which automatically prevented this malware from entering client systems and required no intervention from either SECNAP technicians, client administrators or end-users.
